In the Beginning
In 1972, Deacon Paul Tang moved to Newcastle. On 6th of August of the same year, Brother Shi-Hung Hsiao (now Deacon Roung-Kuang Hsiao) who had just completed his studies in Germany, and Brother Keith Hon paid a visit to the members in Newcastle. They encouraged the members there to gather together to worship God. In mid-September of the same year, Brother John Liew from Cambridge also visited Newcastle. He met with members from Newcastle and Sunderland, and after some discussion it was agreed that regular services would commence at a restaurant owned by one of the members. The place of worship was later moved to a rented hall.
Establishment of the Prayer House
On 11th February 1973, a Prayer House was established in Newcastle. There were approximately 200 members. When Deacon Cephas Yau from Kowloon visited the UK in 1975, he met with deacons and members in Newcastle to discuss the divine work. Later, the Prayer House in Newcastle set up a committee to implement the project of church building.
The First Church
Thank God, in October 1975, members found a church hall that was put up for sale by another local denomination. All the members tried their best to contribute, and over £10,000 was collected. The building was acquired with £11,500. Some members carried out the refurbishment of the building. This included the construction of benches and the pulpit. Consequently, the first True Jesus Church in the UK was dedicated to the Lord on 12th July 1976. This was also the first true church established in Europe, and the name of the Lord was greatly exalted.
The Second Church Dedication
With the blessing of God, membership continued to increase after the dedication , and the building was extended in 1981 in order to accommodate more classroom as result of the growth of Religious Education. Nonetheless, the church and classrooms soon became overcrowded. In 1986, members began to seek another location for the constructing of a new church building. Thanks to God’s guidance, a plot of land (the present church location) was acquired for £100,000 in 1990. Construction commenced at the end of July 1991 and with God’s help, was successfully completed within eight short months, by the end of March 1992. After spending a further few months for decoration, the new church premises was dedicated on 20th July 1992. The total cost exceeded £850,000. More than eight years have passed since the dedication and with more members migrated from Hong Kong and other parts of the UK, together with the newly baptised members, the Newcastle Church now has over 750 registered members, 18 ministers (11 deacons, 7 deaconesses) making her the largest church in the UK in terms of membership.
